Here is my competency based approach to self regulated learning, useful for my professional and personal development as well as institutional learning. It's a structured approach based on a strong planning to attain a target level of mastery with clear means and evaluation indicators. It is a formal framework to assist and document non-formal learning.

Accounting (Organisational skills and competences)

Sept. 2007-Jan. 2008

Planning

  • Established: Sept. 16th, 2007
  • Targeted knowledge, skill, attitude, competence: able to organise and manage my paperwork for new position as freelancer
  • Competence reference framework : none (for now)
  • Present level of mastery: 1/5
  • Goal: level of master 3/5
  • Means:
    • (1) find an accountant and get basic advice
    • (2) reread book on Travailleur autonome for understanding how someone else does it
    • (3) set up my system
    • (4) review and improve my system
  • Why this competence?: not because I have any specific interest in the area, because I have no choice,

Communication (Social and personal skills and competences)

Sept. 2007 - March 2008

Planning

  • Established: Sept. 16th, 2007
  • Targeted knowledge, skill, attitude, competence: communicating clearly when communication involves confronting
  • Competence reference framework : none (for now)
  • Present level of mastery: 2/5
  • Goal: level of master 4/5
  • Means:
    • (1) reflection : identify and describe 3 times I have successfully confronted someone and 3 times I have avoided doing it (live with the stress) : see if there is anything I can learn from this information
    • (2) confront someone and reflect on the experience and read a text on the subject
    • (3) confront someone and reflect on the experience, get tips from someone on the topic
    • (4) confront someone and reflect on the experience, read some more
    • (5) reflect on past and present and conclude
  • Why this competence?: I realised that I have some difficulties communicating appropriatelly when it involves confronting someone. I actually have a certain amount of stress and anxiety about this type of communication, both personally and professionally. I need to make headway and not need to worry about this anymore.

Percussion (Artistic skills and competencies)

Sept-Dec. 2007

  • Established: Sept. 9th, 2007
  • Targeted skill or competence: play african percussion
  • Competence reference framework: none
  • Present level of mastery: 0/5
  • Goal: level of master 2/5 (to be able to play a simple rythm with pleasure (versus stress))
  • Means: taking a course Samajam
  • Why this competence?: I love music and dance, but have never ever played an instrument, so now is the time to start. It is for personal pleasure, but also I believe that african percussion will help me take my place in the world.
